BC Oil Tanks: Q & A

Living in British Columbia and thinking about selling your property? Did you know that many properties have oil tanks buried on the grounds? This is something that is quite common in Vancouver and the surrounding areas, but not many people know about it.

Why would there be an oil tank buried in my garden?

Well, the reason for this is that in the mid 20th century, oil was the main heating fuel used in BC. Then, we switched to natural gas. Natural gas uses a different system so the oil tanks became obsolete and were left buried.

Why does this affect me?

If you want to sell your property in British Colombia, then you must get the oil tank removed first. However, the main problem with this is not knowing whether one is on the grounds because they are buried.

How do I find out if there is an oil tank on my property?

Finding out whether you have an oil tank on the grounds, thankfully, does not involve digging up the entire grounds. Nowadays this can be determined with oil tank scanning. Oil tank removal companies can first use oil tank scanning technology to find out if there actually is a tank on your property. Oil tank scanning technology means using radar signals to pick up anything below the ground such as an oil tank. Oil tank scanning technology can tell them exactly where it is, so minimal damage is done to the ground when removing it.

What next?

After oil tank scanning, if an oil tank is found, then it needs to be removed. The same company that did the oil tank scanning can do the oil tank removal and make sure that your property is certified free from oil tanks and can be sold as you please.
